La Pizza Fresca

What a night...a whirlwind affair that started at the offices of Christie's fine wine department, and then culminated at La Pizza Fresca downtown. MK, RY and yours truly along with 5 bottles of wine (3 Reislings, 1 Zierfanlander and 1 Burgundy) sat at the Italian restaurant's bar and just talked wine for 3 hours non stop.

1. Goldberg Riesling, Weingut Van Volxem, 2007: Saar Riesling from the Roman Niewodniscanski’s estate is a treat. Rich melon fruit on the nose with a bit of lemon. The palate is concentrated with a silky texture and a faint hint of minerality. The delicacy and perfume of the Mosel region are the distinguishing characteristics of this polished wine. An absolute pleasure for Mosel lovers.

2. Weingut Knoll, Reid Loibenberg Riesling, Smaragd, 2002: Opened at just the right time! Muted petrol notes greet the nose, distinguishing characteristics of an aged Riesling. Notes of honey, dried apricots and the complex concentration of mature fruit are obvious from the first few minutes. The harvest usually takes place during the second week of December for this rich Smaragd. Wonderful accompaniment to our 3 Pizzas.

3. Weingut Knoll, Reid Schutt Durnsteiner Riesling, 2001: my favorite wine of the evening,  with the Austrian Saint Urban the Golden (Austria's favored saint) on the wine label, it would be indeed difficult to go wrong with the wine inside the bottle! The year 2001 was blessed with a warm summer and a rainy fall in which the grapes did not get as ripe as the ones in the year 2000 but matured with their acidity levels remaining high. I find that Knoll is always a little difficult when young but when opened during it's time of maturity it is intrinsically delicious.

4. Morey Saint Denis, 'en la Rue de Vergy' Domaine Perrot Minot, 2002: Simple perfection. A classic style Burgundy, delicate, with a hint of gaminess, faint blue cheese on the nose, well balanced tannins and an incredibly long finish. The 2002 is drinking very well. Notable through it's lovely light color, I can understand how wine lovers 'start with Bordeaux and end up in Burgundy.' This wine is quite a find, a village wine but with grapes grown right next to a grand cru vineyard.

5. Stadlmann Zierfandler, Mandel-Hoh 2006: An old traditional grape varietal from Austria which grows almost exclusively in the tiny Thermenregion of the country. The Mandel-Hoh vineyard is the world's top site for this grape planted with decades to their  vines. Most plantings of Zierfandler were pulled out during the 80's and 90's and planted with Riesling and Gruner Veltliner but now the varietal is showing  a revival and this particular bottle is probably the best expression of the grape. Fruit forward with a refreshing acidity, some spice and mineral notes, the Mandel-Hoh vineyard Zierfandler was a very pleasant surprise.

Before I left Pizza Fresca, the owner Brad was kind enough to show me his absolutely amazing and densely packed underground cellar. Probably the most unusual wine list for an Italian restaurant notable mostly for it's delicious wood fired brick oven Neapolitan style pizza.

Via Quadronno

My new favourite place! Almost hidden between a few high end stores and a tree lined street, almost falling onto busy Madison avenue but not quite.  At Via Quadronno you will find upper east side neighbours or a few of us that like to trek from downtown Manhattan to where ever our taste buds might take us. And if Ms Chambraye had not mentioned Via Quaddrone as a meeting spot for us girls we might never have found this cute restaurant and coffee shop. So thanks Ms Ray, even though you cancelled on us at the last minute we found that we were not too badly off.

Steeped in Milanese traditions, Via Quadronno is famous for not only mouth watering Paninis, but also for unforgettable mochaccinos and scrumptious homemade pastries.

Scarpetta

I had first met Chef Scott Conant at Alto, an extremely sophisticated Italian restaurant specialising in Northern Italian Cuisine. He opened Scarpetta about 6 weeks ago in the busy meat packing district of New York City. On entering the restaurant, it becomes a trip not only in the world of gastronomy but into the world of art and architecture as well. The room, designed by S. Russell Groves, holds 70 seats, a long mahogany bar and a modern aesthetic, bringing together contemporary design, warmth and elegance to anyone that ventures in.

Mozzarella Carrozza with Baby Tomatoes
Creamy Polenta with Truffles and mushrooms

A middle course comprising of little plates of the most heavenly tasting of 4 different Pasta dishes

Capretto ( his signature dish made with baby goat)
Orata Rossa

My favourite part of the meal was the wine suggested by their Wine Director Jeffery Tascarella, called Damijan Kaplja. Damijan Podversic, the wine maker is the protégé of Josko Gravner, the maverick of Friulian winemaking and a master vintner. His gorgeous vineyards were overgrown and unwanted before he purchased them and now his entire life's savings have been spent rejuvinating these hillside vineyards close to Gorizia near the Slovenian border. This wine is a blend of Chardonnay, Tocai Friulano and Malvasia Istriana. Kablja (which means “drop” in Slovenian), is a concentrated, golden-colored wine, rich in tannins and packed with fruit flavors. Damijan calls it “living wine”, a term which has become a motto for his winemaking philosophy.

Bar Tano

It has been quite an ordeal moving from my space on Desbrosses street in Manhattan to my new office in the area of Gowanus in Brooklyn. The good news is that I have exchanged one beautiful office space for another equally lovely spot located on the top floor of a former knitting factory.

Between 1840 and 1950, Red Hook and Gowanus supported many thriving industrial businesses; its docks were used by gasworks, coal yards, soap factories and tanneries. Jobs provided by these industries attracted a community with a diverse ethnic character- many of whom settled in the nearby brownstone rowhouses of Carroll Gardens. The construction of the Gowanus Expressway in 1942 and the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel in 1950 effectively severed Red Hook, Gowanus and Carroll Gardens leaving a tremendous negative impact on local businesses, oppressing the neighborhoods’ vibrancy and character.

All of a sudden, this area of Gowanus is undergoing a renaissance, re-attracting new, vibrant small creative manufacturing businesses. It is in this mushrooming scene that Bar Tano opened about 3 months ago, one of the first bar/restaurants to open besides the many delis and the family run Hispanic restaurants between 2nd and 3rd avneues. The lunch at Bar Tano - for under $10.00 you can get a bruschetta or a salad and order any item from their menu. They also have a wonderful selection of beer besides an array of wines from Italy.

Del Posto

Del Posto is magnificent in every respect. All three levels of it. And in this case, whatever is written is not complimentary enough. With the combined forces of the formidable team of Joe Bastianich, Lidia Bastianich and Mario Batali, an expression of Italian-American style of cooking is celebrated here. My favourite aspect of the restaurant besides it's food was the very well pedigreed staff- hence the service was exemplary. Our steward was a very dapper Mons. Stephan Kane (as in Citizen Kane- he told me). A Frenchman from Senegal in an Italian restaurant...only in New York.

I wish that all those that aspire to be servers in NY knew how important service can be to the dining experience (sometimes more important than the food itself). Del Posto was spot on in both regards. And that is the best combination. The sommelier was Emanuele Bartolini. What a guy. He knew his Sardinian wine and this gentleman knew his Krug! Grazie...

Max

Max's is a tiny little trattoria located in Tribeca and is an offshoot of Max's in Alphabet City. As I work in the area I am always looking around for a good luncheon spot. And one afternoon I had the best lunch at Max's accompanied by an excellent Bellini promising myself that I would walk in one evening for dinner.

For those of you not familiar with the neighbourhood, Tribeca is literally translated as the Triangle Below Canal. About 15-20 years ago it was not the most fancy neighbourhood to walk around in. This was an area which was literally forgotten by this city and its people- full of warehouses, forgotten buildings and some suspicious characters. Now, with the infiltration of Robert de Niro, the Tribeca Film Festival, movie stars and hot shot wall street guys, it has become the jewel on the cap of downtown luxury living.

Fresco by Scotto

There are Italian restaurants in NY and then there are Italian Restaurants in NY. Fresco by Scotto falls into the second category. This evening seemed to call for an extraordinary wine and a bottle of Ornellaia 2003 was produced. A very young wine by all standards

but regardless of its youth
it seduced me completely
I had not yet encountered
so many
layers
Depths that had not been imagined
in the world of wine
were mine
to savor
with closed eyes
and bated breath.
It was lust
at first sip..

Potato and Zucchini chips baked with crumbled Gorgonzola cheese
3 types of Plum salad
followed by
Pappardelle with Duck and Wild Mushroom Ragu as the middle course and the
Red Snapper with an Almond Risotto and lightly baked Salmon with Vegetables as our main course
and for dessert.......Bombolina with Raspberry preserve
and a Brownie Fudge Sundae with malted milk ice-cream.
