Tamarind -Tribeca

A visually stunning restaurant that captures the spacious and large scale architecture predominant in the buildings Tribeca. My only lament -Indian cuisine represents food culture from 28 different states and has been influenced by over 5000 years of history, yet:

why do I always find that
'Indian food'
is just naan,
samosas,
masala dosa,
rogan josh,
dal makhani
vindaloo, chicken tikka masala
and Bhel Puri.
oh and samosas!

Paired with Reislings
and Cabernet?

  1. Priya, that is an amazing review. You just tore Tamarind a new navel! Love it and thanks for sharing. Your review expresses my sentiments about so many different aspects of the New York restaurant industry. Food and wine are controlled by business men and not lovers of food and wine. Thank you for your honesty and this lovely blog that should be one of the top food and wine blogs in this city. but we have to be satisfied with Gael Greene and the rest of her ilk from the NYTimes.

  2. Well put. As a matter of fact Gael Greene would not give such rave reviews if it were not for all the free food she receives!

  4. Agreed. Very few restaurants in the city have an incredible or an imaginative list. Some of my favourite places that do are:

    WD 50
    Gotham Bar & Grill
    Scarpetta
    Joel Robuchon
    Dovetail
    Gramercy Tavern
    Blue Hill
    Le Bernardin
    Apiary Restaurant

They also employ some of the most talented and gifted somms in the US.

  5. It takes a lot of imagination and far sighted business acumen to add a successful restaurant to the 10,000 plus NY restaurant scene. Most of these ideas just echo a used and boring formula. The Indian restaurant scene in NY is not only boring but completely uninspired as well.

How many times do I have to see another f......g samosa and naan on the menu? Is that all that Indian food is about?

For really amazing takes on Indian food and the Indian restaurant scene nothing beats London.
